I buy Premium saltine crackers. Always have. But in the interest of saving money, I thought, why not try the Walmart brand?

But I needed a second opinion, so I asked Nate at my local Walmart if their brand was the same as Premium. He said yes, and mentioned that his wife also loves Premium, but is happy with the Walmart brand. He went on to say that he thought their crackers were even made in the same factory as Premium, like a lot of their other products.

Okay, Nate, I’m sold. But was Nate’s opinion the same as mine?

Can you guess which is the Premium cracker and which is the Walmart brand?

Of course the Walmart brand is smaller. Go figure. But the texture is different, too. Walmart crackers don’t have the same crispness as Premiums. Maybe you can figure out why by looking at the list of ingredients.

Premium crackers have 10 more calories per serving than the Walmart brand, but if you know me at all, you know that I don’t really care about calories.

Most of my crackers go into a bowl of soup, so how did Walmart brand crackers perform in soup? Again, since they’re not as crispy as Premium crackers, they didn’t stand up as well in soup.

Let’s compare prices:

Premium (online prices)
Walmart $2.56
Amazon $4.86
Walgreens $3.59

Walmart brand $1.78 (in-store and online)

So, are Walmart brand crackers worth the savings? Uh, no. Sorry, Walmart.

Because of the title of this post, did you think it had to do with race? Ha! Fooled ya! You’ve just been click-baited. 🙂

    • I don’t have any choice but to shop at Walmart. It’s not like I can afford Whole Foods. And some Walmart brands are just as good as the name brand, although I can’t think of one right now. 🙂

    • Since I do a lot of baking, I use the generic brands of flour and sugar, which work just fine. The thing about experimenting is that I now have to decide if it’s worth the trouble to return the item. I’m sitting here trying to remember the last time I returned an item at Walmart… Heck, maybe the ducks that live near me like crackers. 🙂

  1. Perhaps (because of my senior citizen status) I’m more health conscious than the average person, but did no one else notice that the Premium cracker contains PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED Cottonseed Oil? Partially hydrogenated ingredients are, by all accounts, bad news for your longevity, but some companies still use them because it’s cheaper (and yet they often charge more than the competition because of the name brand, as in this case — all the better for their profit margin. I don’t mean to preach, however I’m not just putting in my two cents worth for my health, if you’ll pardon the expression! But you needn’t take my word for it — check it out.

    • Yeah, I noticed the hydrogenated oil. Just like I don’t care about calories, I really don’t care about hydrogenated oil. See, my main priority is managing pain. All that other stuff is just not important. But it makes me wonder about what the oil has to do with taste, because I prefer the taste of the Premium crackers.
