Jennifer Weiss of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention Pain Management Advisory Council. Weiss founded and is currently the president of the Heroin Awareness Committee, a non-profit organization that provides awareness and education to all parts of New Mexico about the opiate problem affecting our youth. Weiss became an advocate for drug abuse prevention after losing her son to a heroin overdose in 2011. She earned her M.B.A. in Business from the University of New Mexico and her B.S. in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix.

Jessica Brewster of Santa Fe has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Brewster currently works as a dentist at La Familia Medical Center in Santa Fe. Brewster holds a D.D.S. Degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Boston College.

Mark T. Chiu of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Chiu currently works at Eye Associates of New Mexico, specializing in eye diseases and surgery. Chiu has been certified in ophthalmology for 25 years. He earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

Ernest Dole of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Dole works as a clinical pharmacist at UNM Hospital. Dole has been a practicing pharmacist for 24 years. He holds a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Tennessee and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Colorado.

Steven M. Jenkusky of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Jenkusky is currently the Medical Director for the Behavioral Health Services Line at the University of New Mexico Psychiatric Center. Jenkusky has over 20 years of experience in psychiatry. Jenkusky was a resident psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine and earned his M.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

Joanna Girard Katzman of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Katzman currently is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Integration and Ambulatory Services for the University of New Mexico Health System. Katzman is also currently the Medical Director of the Project ECHO Chronic Pain and Headache Clinic. She holds a Medical Degree from Yale University School of Medicine and a Master’s of Science in Public Health from UCLA School of Public Health.

Dr. Frances Cabeza de Baca-Lovett of Santa Fe has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Lovett , a pharmacist, has been practicing clinical pharmacology for over 20 years. She also owns and operates Signature Consult in Santa Fe, a health management business specializing in pathophysiology. Lovett holds a Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of New Mexico.

Steven A. Seifert of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Board of Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Seifert is currently a professor at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine. Seifert also serves as the Medical Director at the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center. He has over 35 years of experience as a practicing physician in emergency medicine. Seifert holds an M.D. from the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine and a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University.

Robert Geist of Albuquerque has been appointed to the Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention and Pain Management Advisory Council. Geist is currently an independent contractor for Santa Fe Center Enterprises, where he manages property use for movie production. Geist holds a bachelors degree in Psychology from Menlo College.

Joanna Katzman, MD, MSPH, an Associate Professor in Neurology, is the Director of the University of New Mexico Pain Center and Co- Director of the UNM Project ECHO Chronic Pain Program, which have received the 2011 American Pain Society Clinical Centers of Excellence Award. Dr. Katzman is currently working with the Army’s Department of Defense to roll-out Army Pain ECHO throughout the Regional Medical Commands worldwide. Dr. Katzman currently resides on the New Mexico Governor’s Council for “Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention”. She has trained over 1,400 clinicians from New Mexico in the last 9 months in continuing medical education courses on “Pain and Addictions”. She formally assisted the Veterans Affairs with ECHO Pain replication (SCAN-ECHO), and presently works with the Indian Health Service’s National Center for Tele-behavioral Health as they begin to replicate ECHO Pain and Addictions. Dr. Katzman has served on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee for Gulf War and Health, “Treating Chronic Multisymptom Illness” and she is currently serving on a second IOM committee for Gulf War and Health defining a Consensus Case Definition for Chronic Multisympton Illness.

A. The “prescription drug misuse and overdose prevention and pain management advisory council” is created and shall be administratively attached to the department of health.
